We will put Muhammad on the witness stand to see if his moral character during his prophetic career qualifies him as a prophet of the true God. We will only use sources acceptable to Muslims to evaluate him. To assess Muhammad is of utmost importance because Islam stands and falls on the character of Muhammad. Today, Muslims are willing to kill and be killed because they believe that Muhammad is a true prophet of God. They should be told the truth.
THE BEGINNING OF MUHAMMAD’S CALLING
Muslims claim that Muhammad received his inspiration through the angel Gabriel.
Sahih Bukhari, Volume 1, Book 1, Hadith Number 4:
“Then it is (for Allah) to make you recite it (and its meaning will be clear by itself through your tongue). Afterwards, Allah’s Apostle used to listen to Gabriel whenever he came and after his departure he used to recite it as Gabriel had recited it.”
In the Bible, whenever a revelation is given to a prophet through the agency of angels, there is not a single instance where the angel possesses the individual. Neither does the angel physically harm the recipient of the messages or cause that individual to foam at the mouth or make uncontrollable grunts and noises or become suicidal.
However, these descriptions are common in demonic activities, whereby the unclean spirit enters into the individual causing him to display certain characteristics similar to the ones described here. And shocking as it might be to Muslims, Muhammad displayed strikingly similar behavior when he came under the influence of this spirit impersonating the angel Gabriel. And we are not the ones saying it.
Consider now the following experiences of Muhammad as described in Islam’s own sources. And compare these experiences with the Biblical account of demon possessions that we have provided alongside it:
THE POSSESSION BY THE SPIRIT
Mishkat IV, page 360:
“‘And indeed I saw him while the revelation descended upon him on an intensely cold day; then it left him while his brow steamed with sweat.’”
Acts 16:18: Finally Paul said to the spirit, “In the name of Jesus Christ I command you to come out of her!” At that moment the spirit left her.”
PHYSICALLY HARMED BY THE SPIRIT
Sahih Bukhari, Volume 1, Book 1, Number 3:
The Prophet added, “The angel caught me (forcefully) and pressed me so hard that I could not bear it any more. He then released me and again asked me to read and I replied, ‘I do not know how to read.’ Thereupon he caught me again and pressed me a second time till I could not bear it any more. He then released me and again asked me to read but again I replied, ‘I do not know how to read (or what shall I read)?’ Thereupon he caught me for the third time and pressed me, and then released me and said, ‘Read in the name of your Lord, who has created (all that exists) has created man from a clot.
Mark 5:5-9: And when Jesus had come out of the boat, immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit…And always, night and day, he was in the mountains and in the tombs, crying out and cutting himself with stones. For He (Jesus) said to him, ”Come out of the man, unclean spirit!”
FOAMING AT THE MOUTH
Mizanul MizanuŸl Haqq, page 345:
“After an accession of shivering and shutting his eyes, there used to come over him what resembled a swoon, his face would foam and he would roar like a young camel.”
Mark 9:20: “So they brought him. When the spirit saw Jesus, it immediately threw the boy into a convulsion. He fell to the ground and rolled around, foaming at the mouth.”
MAKING UNCONTROLLABLE GRUNTS AND NOISES
Mizanul MizanuŸl Haqq, page 345:
“…there used to come over him…and he would roar like a young camel.”
Luke 9:39: The spirit seizes him and he suddenly screams; it throws him into convulsions so that he foams at the mouth. It scarcely ever leaves him and is destroying him.
Ibn Ishaq’s Sirat Rasul Allah:
So I (Muhammad) read it, and he (Gabriel) departed from me. And I awoke from my sleep, and it was as though these words were written on my heart. Now none of God’s creatures was more horrible to me than a poet or a man possessed: I could not even look at them. I thought, “Woe is me poet or possessed – Never shall Quraysh say this of me! I will go to the top of the mountain and throw myself down that I may kill myself and gain rest.”
When Jesus cast out demons from a man, they entered a herd of swine. What did the possessed swine do? They became suicidal. They killed themselves by jumping off from a cliff into the sea where they drowned.
Matthew 8:32: Jesus said to them, “Go!” The demons came out and went into the pigs. Suddenly, the whole herd rushed down the cliff into the sea and died in the waters.
Mizanul MizanuŸl Haqq, page 345:
“Ibn Ishaq says that, before the Revelation first began to descend upon him, Mohammed’s friends feared that he was suffering from the evil eye: and that, when it came upon him, almost the same illness attacked him again…On the authority of ‘Amr ibn Sharhabil it is stated that Muhammad said to Khadijah, “When I was alone I heard a cry: ‘O Muhammad, O Muhammad.”‘ In tradition (رواية) it is stated that he said, “I fear lest I should become a magician, lest one should proclaim me a follower of the Jinn”; and again: “I fear lest there should be madness” (or demoniac possession جنون) “in me”. After an accession of shivering and shutting his eyes, there used to come over him what resembled a swoon, his face would foam, and he would roar like a young camel.”
It is important to note that none of the Biblical prophets ever questioned the source of their revelations because they were very sure of the inspiration they were receiving. Muhammad’s experience was far more similar to the experience of spirit mediums than that of the prophets of the true God.
Other Hadiths mention that when inspiration came down to Muhammad not only did his countenance change and appear troubled but he also became incredibly heavy. If Muhammad was riding on the back of a camel at the time the inspiration arrived, the camel became incapable of withstanding his weight (under possession). The legs of the camel would buckle and it would be forced to crouch. Islamic record shows that upon the revelation of the third verse of Surah Maida, the legs of Adba (Muhammad’s camel) were on the verge of breaking, forcing Muhammad to dismount. (See Ahmed, II, 176; Ahmed, VI, 445; Ibn Saad, I, 197; Tabarî, Tafsîr, VI, 106.)
In Insanu’l Uyun as quoted in Mean’s Haqq, page 346, we can read a report by Zaid ibn Thabith (Muhammad’s secretary) saying:
“Once his leg fell upon mine, and, by Allah, there is no such heavy leg as was that of the Apostle of Allah….As often as the Prophet received inspiration, it seemed as if his soul was being taken from him, for he had always a kind of swoon and looked like one intoxicated.”
Mastery in the Qur’anic Sciences, by al-Suyuti, 1:45-46:
Zaid b. Thabit said: “When the inspiration came down upon Muhammad, he himself became heavier. One time, his thigh fell against my thigh, and I swear to God, I have never found anything that was heavier than the thigh of Muhammad. Whenever the inspiration came upon him, while he was on his camel, it limped, and its leg was thought to be broken; and sometimes it squatted.”
These forms of behavior were not exhibited by any of the prophets of the true God. And we can be very sure that God did not send the angel Gabriel to Muhammad. According to the definition provided in a legal dictionary, a character witness is a person who testifies in a trial on behalf of a person as to that person’s good ethical qualities and morality both by the personal knowledge of the witness and the person’s reputation in the community. Such testimony is primarily relevant when the party’s honesty or morality is an issue, particularly in most criminal cases and civil cases such as fraud.
In many of the verses in the Qur’an, we can read what the inhabitants of Mecca thought about Muhammad. Those who knew him best – his neighbors – called him a madman, a mad poet, demon-possessed and a magician. He was viewed as a bewitched poet under some spell. His was not the impression of a normal man to the Meccans, but that of a mentally disturbed person who often fell into a trance. Let us consider some Qur’anic verses to prove our point.
Surah 10:2: Is it a matter of wonderment to men that We have sent Our inspiration to a man from among themselves? – That he should warn mankind (of their danger), and give the good news to the Believers that they have before their Lord the lofty rank of truth. (But) say the Unbelievers: “This is indeed an evident sorcerer!” (Yusuf Ali)
Surah 15:6: “And they say: O thou unto whom the Reminder is revealed, lo! Thou art indeed a madman!” (Pickthall)
Surah 17:47-48: We are fully aware of what they wish to hear when they listen to you; and what they say when they converse in private; and when the wrongdoers say, You are only following a man who is bewitched! See to what they liken you to! (W. Khan)
Surah 25:8: And the evildoers say, ‘The man you follow is simply under a spell.’ (A. Haleem)
Surah 37:35-36: “For when it was said unto them, There is no god save Allah, they were scornful and said: Shall we forsake our gods for a mad poet?” (Pickthall)
Surah 38:4: They are surprised that a Warner should come to them from among themselves. They say, ‘This is a magician, a great liar.’ (W. Khan)
Surah 44:14: Yet they turn away from him and say: “Tutored by others, a man possessed!” (Yusuf Ali)
Allah had to reassure Muhammad’s companions:
Surah 81:22: Your companion (Muhammad) does not suffer from any mental illness. (Sarwar)
Even more disturbing is the fact that Allah himself had to reassure Muhammad that he is not mad or possessed. Something must be seriously wrong for Muhammad to be comforted in this manner.
Surah 52:29-30: Therefore, proclaim thou the praises (of thy Lord): for by the Grace of thy Lord, thou art no (vulgar) soothsayer, nor art thou one possessed. Or do they say: – “A Poet! We await for him some calamity (hatched) by Time!” (Yusuf Ali)
Surah 68:2: Thou art not, by the Grace of thy Lord, mad or possessed. (Yusuf Ali)
Muhammad’s contemporaries saw him as a demon possessed sorcerer who fabricated scriptures. Naturally, all of these Qur’anic verses are trying to prove that Muhammad was not possessed. However, in the process, the Qur’an inadvertently reveals the opinion of the contemporaries of Muhammad based on their observation of his behavior. Since the strange conduct of Muhammad is not denied in the Qur’an and the Hadith, Muslims try to explain away his actions by giving a spiritual explanation to it. But in actual fact, Muhammad himself exhibited fear and doubt concerning the manner in which he received his revelations.
The evidences from Muslim sources themselves point to the conclusion that:
(1) The revelations Muhammad actually received, did not come from Jehovah, the true God.
(2) The spirit that spoke to Muhammad is clearly not the angel Gabriel but an impersonating demon that delivered contradictory messages to Muhammad. Muhammad was deceived and victimized by the impersonating spirit because he was unacquainted with the knowledge of the true God. Lacking knowledge, he believed every utterance of this spirit.
(3) The spirit that spoke to Muhammad motivated him to commit gross acts of wickedness and indecency. Please consider the evidences provided below.
We will now put Muhammad on the witness stand to see if his moral character during his prophetic career qualifies him as a prophet of the true God. Did he exhibit the spirit of the true God or did he display demonic traits during his prophetic career. We will only use sources acceptable to Muslims to evaluate him. As stated earlier, Islam stands and falls on the character of Muhammad.
MUHAMMAD THE SUICIDAL
Sahih Bukhari, Volume 9, Book 87, Number 111:
Narrated ‘Aisha: But after a few days Waraqa died and the Divine Inspiration was also paused for a while and the Prophet became so sad as we have heard that he intended several times to throw himself from the tops of high mountains and every time he went up the top of a mountain in order to throw himself down, Gabriel would appear before him and say, “O Muhammad! You are indeed Allah’s Apostle in truth” whereupon his heart would become quiet and he would calm down and would return home. And whenever the period of the coming of the inspiration used to become long, he would do as before, but when he used to reach the top of a mountain, Gabriel would appear before him and say to him what he had said before.
MUHAMMAD THE DELUSIONAL
Sahih Muslim, Book 030, Number 5654:
Jabir b. Samura reported Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: I recognise the stone in Mecca which used to pay me salutations before my advent as a Prophet and I recognise that even now.
MUHAMMAD THE BEWITCHED
Sahih Muslim, Book 026, Number 5428:
A’isha reported that a Jew from among the Jews of Banu Zuraiq who was called Labid b. al-A’sam cast spell upon Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) with the result that he (under the influence of the spell) felt that he had been doing something whereas in fact he had not been doing that. (This state of affairs lasted) until one day or during one night Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) made supplication (to dispel its effects).
MUHAMMAD THE LIAR
Sahih Bukhari, Volume 5, Book 59, Number 369:
Narrated Jabir bin ‘Abdullah: Allah’s Apostle said, “Who is willing to kill Ka’b bin Al-Ashraf who has hurt Allah and His Apostle?” Thereupon Muhammad bin Maslama got up saying, “O Allah’s Apostle! Would you like that I kill him?” The Prophet said, “Yes,” Muhammad bin Maslama said, “Then allow me to say a false thing (i.e. to deceive Kab).” The Prophet said, “You may say it.”
Muhammad informed Umar (the second Caliph), and he called the Prophet a liar.
Caliph Umar knew Muhammad lied. Can you imagine one of the Apostles calling Jesus a liar?
MUHAMMAD THE ANTI-SEMITE
Sahih Muslim, Book 041, Number 6985:
Abu Huraira reported Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: The last hour would not come unless the Muslims will fight against the Jews and the Muslims would kill them until the Jews would hide themselves behind a stone or a tree and a stone or a tree would say: Muslim, or the servant of Allah, there is a Jew behind me; come and kill him; but the tree Gharqad would not say, for it is the tree of the Jews.
Sahih Bukhari, Volume 4, Book 56, Number 791:
Narrated ‘Abdullah bin ‘Umar: I heard Allah’s Apostle saying, “The Jews will fight with you, and you will be given victory over them so that a stone will say, ‘O Muslim! There is a Jew behind me; kill him!’ “
MUHAMMAD THE BRIBER
Sahih Bukhari, Volume 4, Book 55, Number 558:
So the Quraish and the Ansar became angry and said, “He (i.e. the Prophet’) gives the chief of Najd and does not give us.” The Prophet said, “I give them so as to attract their hearts (to Islam).”
MUHAMMAD THE MURDERER
The Jews were made to come down, and Allah’s Messenger imprisoned them. Then the Prophet went out into the marketplace of Medina, and he had trenches dug in it. He sent for the Jewish men and had them beheaded in those trenches. They were brought out to him in batches. They numbered 800 to 900 boys and men.
“Then the Apostle divided the property, wives, and children of the Qurayza among the Muslims. Allah’s Messenger took his fifth of the booty.”
The Messenger of Allah commanded that all of the Jewish men and boys who had reached puberty should be beheaded. Then the Prophet divided the wealth, wives, and children of the Banu Qurayza Jews among the Muslims.
The morning after the murder of Ashraf, the Prophet declared, ‘Kill any Jew who falls under your power.’
MUHAMMAD THE PEDOPHILE
Sahih Bukhari, Volume 7, Book 62, Number 64:
Narrated By ‘Aisha : That the Prophet married her when she was six years old and he consummated his marriage when she was nine years old, and then she remained with him for nine years (i.e., till his death).
MUHAMMAD THE TERRORIST
Sahih Bukhari, Volume 4, Book 52, Number 220:
Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah’s Apostle said, “I have been sent with the shortest expressions bearing the widest meanings, and I have been made victorious with terror (cast in the hearts of the enemy), and while I was sleeping, the keys of the treasures of the world were brought to me and put in my hand.” Abu Huraira added: Allah’s Apostle has left the world and now you, people, are bringing out those treasures.
Sahih Muslim, Book 004, Number 1066:
Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) said: I have been helped by terror (in the heart of the enemy); I have been given words which are concise but comprehensive in meaning; and while I was asleep I was brought the keys of the treasures of the earth which were placed in my hand.
“It is not for any prophet to have captives until he hath made slaughter in the land. Ye desire the lure of this world and Allah desireth (for you) the Hereafter, and Allah is Mighty, Wise.” (Pickthall)
MUHAMMAD THE PLUNDERER
Sahih Bukhari, Volume 4, Book 53, Number 351:
Narrated Jabir bin Abdullah: Allah’s Apostle said, “Booty has been made legal for me.”
MUHAMMAD THE HYPOCRITE
Sahih Bukhari, Volume 7, Book 62, Number 157:
Narrated Al-Miswar b. Makhrama: I heard Allah’s Apostle who was on the pulpit, saying, “Banu Hisham bin Al-Mughira have requested me to allow them to marry their daughter to Ali bin Abu Talib, but I don’t give permission, and will not give permission unless ‘Ali bin Abi Talib divorces my daughter in order to marry their daughter, because Fatima is a part of my body, and I hate what she hates to see, and what hurts her, hurts me.”
While Muhammad supported polygamy as taught in the Qur’an, he did not want the husband of his daughter to practice polygamy while he is married to her. Why the double standard?
MUHAMMAD THE SEX DEVOTEE
Sahih Bukhari, Volume 7, Book 62, Number 142:
Narrated Anas bin Malik: The Prophet used to pass by to have sexual relation with all his wives in one night, and at that time, he had nine wives.
MUHAMMAD THE ASSASSINATOR
Asma D. Marwan was of B. Umayyya b. Zayd. When Abu `Afak had been killed she displayed disaffection…Blaming Islam and its followers she said: ‘I despise B. Malik and al-Nabit and `Auf and B. al-Khazraj…You obey a stranger who encourages you to murder for booty. You are greedy men. Is there no honor among you?’ Upon hearing those lines Muhammad said, ‘Will no one rid me of this woman?’ Umayr, a zealous Muslim, decided to execute the Prophet’s wishes. That very night he crept into the writer’s home while she lay sleeping surrounded by her young children. There was one at her breast. Umayr removed the suckling babe and then plunged his sword into the poet. The next morning in the mosque, Muhammad, who was aware of the assassination, said, ‘You have helped Allah and His Apostle.’ Umayr said. ‘She had five sons; should I feel guilty?’ ‘No,’ the Prophet answered. ‘Killing her was as meaningless as two goats butting heads.’” (See also Ibn Sa`d’s Kitab al-Tabaqat al-Kabir, translated by S. Moinul Haq, volume 2, page 31)
Sahih Bukhari, Volume 5, Book 59, Number 370:
Narrated Al-Bara bin Azib: Allah’s Apostle sent a group of persons to Abu Rafi. Abdullah bin Atik entered his house at night, while he was sleeping, and killed him.
The Messenger ordered six men and four women to be assassinated.
MUHAMMAD THE MERCILESS
When the Apostle ordered him to be killed `Uqba said, ‘But who will look after my children?’ ‘Hell’, he said, and `Asim b. Thabit b. Abu’l-Aqlah al-Ansari killed him according to what Abu `Ubayda b. Muhammad b. `Ammar b. Yasir told me. (See also Tabari IX:121)
MUHAMMAD THE THIEF
“Allah divided the booty stolen from the first caravan after he made spoils permissible. He gave four-fifths to those He had allowed to take it and one-fifth to His Apostle.”
MUHAMMAD THE TORTURER
Kinanah b. al-Rabi b. al-Huqyaq who had the treasure of B. Nadir was brought to the Messenger of God, who questioned him; but he denied knowing where it was. Then the messenger of God was brought a Jew who said to him, “I have seen Kinanah walk around this ruin every morning.” The Messenger of God said to Kinanah: “What do you say? If we find it in your possession, I will kill you.” “All right,” he answered. The Messenger of God commanded that the ruin should be dug up, and some of the treasure was extracted from it. Then he asked him for the rest of it. Kinanah refused to surrender it; so the Messenger of God gave orders concerning him to al-Zubayr b. al-‘Awwam, saying, “torture him until you root out what he has.” Al-Zubayr kept twirling his firestick in his breast until Kinanah almost expired; then the Messenger of God gave him to Muhammad b. Maslamah, who beheaded him to avenge his brother Mahmud b. Maslamah.” (End of Quote)
Surah 5:33: The only reward of those who make war upon Allah and His messenger and strive after corruption in the land will be that they will be killed or crucified, or have their hands and feet on alternate sides cut off, or will be expelled out of the land. Such will be their degradation in the world, and in the Hereafter theirs is an awful doom. (Pickthall)
Sahih Muslim, Book 38, Number 4359:
Narrated Abdullah ibn Abbas: The verse “The punishment of those who wage war against Allah and His Apostle, and strive with might and main for mischief through the land is execution, or crucifixion, or the cutting off of hands and feet from opposite side or exile from the land…most merciful” was revealed about polytheists. If any of them repents before they are arrested, it does not prevent from inflicting on him the prescribed punishment which he deserves.
Sahih Bukhari, Volume 8, Book 82, Number 795:
Narrated Anas: The Prophet cut off the hands and feet of the men belonging to the tribe of ‘Uraina and did not cauterise (their bleeding limbs) till they died.
The above list describing Muhammad’s criminal behavior is provided by the most authentic Islamic sources. They are based on eyewitness accounts of the most devout Muslims who are defenders of the Islamic faith. They are the testimonies of the Companions of Muhammad who lived with him. They have no reason, whatsoever, to fabricate these stories. In fact, they viewed Muhammad’s conduct as divinely designed. Even after his death, they emulated him and continued in the same wicked course. Their devotion to him was so absolute that could not even perceive the wickedness he committed in the name of Allah.
Even so, the above list is not complete. They are too many to decipher. Time and space will not permit us to detail all his sins and atrocities of Muhammad. For instance, Muhammad was also a rapist, a warmonger, a wife-beater, a slave owner, an animal hater, an idolater, a polygamist who even exceeded the Islamic limits and the list goes on. Can we expect such behavior from a man claiming to be a prophet of God?
A true prophet will not act the way as Muhammad did. He will not force his faith on the people but will win them over by his virtue. He will not wage war on others to spread his message. He will not command armies. He will not kill. Yet, Muhammad committed all these evil deeds in the name of Allah. Will the true God encourage his worshippers to emulate such ungodly behavior? Yet, Allah does. What does this reveal to us about Allah?
Surah 33:21: Ye have indeed in the Messenger of Allah a beautiful pattern of conduct for any one whose hope is in Allah and the Final Day, and who engages much in the Praise of Allah. (Yusuf Ali)
However, the Holy Bible reveals a vital clue in identifying false prophets:
Matthew 7:15-16: “Be on the watch for the false prophets that come to you in sheep’s covering, but inside they are ravenous wolves. By their fruits you will recognize them.”
As we can see, the fruitage of Muhammad was rotten to the core. The last book of the Holy Bible contains a very sobering warning message:
Revelation 21:8: “But as for the cowards and those without faith and those who are disgusting in their filth and murderers and fornicators and those practicing spiritism and idolaters and all the liars, their portion will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulphur. This means the second death.”
In contrast, Jesus did not kill anyone. In fact, he came to save mankind. Concerning him, the Holy Bible states in Luke 19:7:
“For the Son of man came to seek and to save what was lost.”
Satan had also tried to influence Jesus. However Jesus rebuked him by quoting the powerful inspired words of God in the Holy Scriptures.
Matthew 4:8-11: “Again the Devil took him along to an unusually high mountain, and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory, and he said to him: “All these things I will give you if you fall down and do an act of worship to me.” Then Jesus said to him: “Go away, Satan! For it is written, ‘It is Jehovah your God you must worship, and it is to him alone you must render sacred service.’” Then the Devil left him.”
While Satan left Jesus, this wicked rebellious spirit controlled and influenced the life of Muhammad. Islamic sources themselves testify to this fact.
